Having just taken a similar trip in Novmeber there are a few important things to consider & remember. In the states you're pretty much a.o.k for going at your own pace when and where you want to. Once you get into Mex, things change pretty dramatically. First, I'm not sure what the laws are for taking animals across international boarders. So know them and abide by them. Otherwise you may end leaving your belove friend in TJ. Second, if you're going to Mex by yourself make sure you stay in relatively populated areas. There have been some serious horror stories about car jackings, rape, and the like over hte past year. things are getting pretty tense down there with the American expatriate population increasing. third, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle for almost all of mex past Ensanada. If you're camping, take your own water and cooking gear (stoves, utensles, etc), but you can buy meats & bread down there. fourth, get a surfers guide to baja to check spots based upon your ability and where you want to go. I was in a small town called Erendira about 3.5 hours south of the borader. pretty cool place. you camp on cliffs above the beach or there is a hostle for $15 per day (includes breakfast). Fifth, the water in mex is almost as cold as it is in NorCal. remember your wetsuite! Sixth read up on mexican driving laws and customs. No night driving and watch out for cops. They're worse than banditos. Seventh, always break up what cash you have into small amount of $50 or less and stash in various places. This way when you open your wallet to pay the cop for the fine you got for not driving in the lane you were suppose to be in when that lane was closed off by the cops, you can actually say I only have $50 on me. Eighth, when they want you to go to an ATM to get more cash, tell them you'd like to go to the police station to pay your fine. they'll take what you have in your wallet, which is only $50... Nineth, have a blast! Baja is a great place to go surf... just remember its not America and jsut like going to any foreign land, knowing as much about where you are going before you go is key to a safe and fun trip. |
